Approximately one in three people suffer from gum problems. These problems manifest in numerous ways, but the vast majority are unaware they are affected. The issues creep in slowly and can cause unpleasant conditions. It is therefore important to regularly assess the state of the gums to prevent further problems. You can have your gums checked by your dentist or dental hygienist. Should your gums be in an advanced and painful stage, you will come into contact with so-called periodontology. But what does this entail?
Periodontology
What is periodontology?
Periodontology is derived from the word ‘periodontal’, which means around the tooth. It is a specialization within dentistry that primarily deals with gum diseases. The periodontist is a dentist who focuses solely on the diagnosis of periodontal conditions. This refers to gum problems that affect the teeth and molars. Periodontitis is a common condition treated within periodontology. Periodontitis is a disease that affects the gums and attacks the bone surrounding one or more teeth. This begins with inflamed gums and can cause permanent damage.
When to make an appointment for periodontology?
In most cases, you will come into contact with periodontology if your dentist or dental hygienist refers you. This often involves treatments for serious periodontal problems (the gums) or the placement of implants. This includes conditions such as:
- Severely swollen and/or sensitive gums;
- Bleeding gums;
- Receding gums;
- Genetic periodontitis;
- Shifting teeth;
- Implants.
How do you prevent a visit to periodontology?
Prevention is better than cure. We firmly believe in this at Your Dental. Good oral hygiene is the golden tip for a healthy and clean set of teeth. But good hygiene does not stop at brushing your teeth well. Regular visits to the dentist or dental hygienist also contribute to healthy teeth. This is because a layer of tartar forms on the teeth that can hardly be brushed away. This must be removed with instruments during the semi-annual check-up and/or cleaning. Nevertheless, periodontitis cannot always be prevented. Especially if this disease is genetically determined, it is important to remain alert. This prevents you from being too late.
