Exposed dentin: what is it?

Having sensitive teeth can have many causes. Exposed dentin is one of them. While dentin is normally covered by gums or enamel, this is not the case with exposed dentin. Here, the gums have receded and/or the enamel layer has disappeared. Your Dental is ready to assist you with this. Exactly what is needed to treat your exposed dentin depends on the cause and the degree of sensitivity.

Degree of sensitivity

There is no single answer to how sensitive exposed dentin is. For example, one person may experience a lot of pain, while another has little to no discomfort. Furthermore, the degree of sensitivity can vary from moment to moment.

Need treatment from a dentist in Almere?

Treatment by a dentist is not always necessary. Sometimes you can already do several things yourself to prevent exposed dentin and/or reduce the pain.

What can you do yourself?

If your dentin is exposed due to receding gums, it is important to brush well and not too hard. Gums recede as you get older, but poor oral care can accelerate this process. Do you have exposed dentin because the enamel layer has disappeared? Acids from drinks, food, or stomach acid are usually the culprits in this case. The wearing away of enamel by acids is also known as dental erosion. Ways in which you can prevent (further) dental erosion as much as possible include:

  • Do not brush your teeth immediately after eating. During eating, the smear layer on your exposed dentin can temporarily become somewhat softer. If you start using your toothbrush immediately, you may brush this smear layer away. Ensure there is at least an hour between eating and brushing your teeth.
  • Try to consume as few acidic foods as possible.
  • If you do consume acidic foods, rinse your mouth with milk or water afterwards.
  • Use a toothpaste specifically made for sensitive teeth.
  • Do not brush too hard.

What can we do for you?

Are you suffering a lot from your exposed dentin? Or is the pain manageable, but would you like advice from our specialists on what you can best do? You are always welcome at our dental practice in Almere. We investigate why your dentin has become exposed and provide tailored advice. If necessary and desired, we apply special varnishes, such as fluoride, to your dentin. This seals the opening and thus reduces irritation. In some cases, further steps are required, such as a root canal treatment. If that is the case, we will discuss the options with you in detail.
