What is implantology?

Implantology is a fast-growing segment in the field of dentistry, involving the replacement of one or more teeth with implants. Implants are artificial tooth roots and are manufactured from titanium. The implantologist places these into the jawbone.

The implants serve to extend or replace the current dentition. When roots are missing due to, for example, tooth decay, the implantologist examines whether it is possible to place a bridge. Examples of implantology treatments include:

  • If a single tooth is missing, the implantologist places a crown on the implant.
  • When multiple teeth are involved, a bridge may be the appropriate solution to support a partial denture.
Does the entire set of teeth or a jaw need to be replaced? Options include a fixed bridge in combination with a removable prosthesis. The patient secures this denture onto the implants using snap fasteners or a bar-and-sleeve construction.

Thanks to implantology, much is possible to restore the teeth in both an aesthetic and functional manner.

Who is implantology suitable for?

Implantology treatments are suitable for those who are missing a tooth or molar. Tooth loss makes it more difficult to chew and bite off food. If a tooth is missing at the front of the mouth, it causes insecurity during social interaction. For these reasons, a dentist chooses to place crowns, implants, or bridges.

The placement of an implant goes further than filling a cavity. Placing multiple crowns in combination with a bridge is a process that sometimes takes several weeks or months. This process is very personal for everyone. The implant must be placed at the correct position and depth in the jaw, and the crown that goes on the implant must have the correct shape, color, and strength.

How long do implants last?

As a rule, crowns and bridges last a lifetime. The minimum lifespan is 10 years. This also applies to an implant. The lifespan of crowns, bridges, and implants also depends on maintenance and oral hygiene. If you brush and floss well, do not smoke, and visit the specialist regularly for check-ups, the implants will be better preserved.

What types of implants are there?

There are two methods for implantation. In the first method, the implant already protrudes directly through the gums after being placed in the jawbone (one-stage implant). In the second method, the implant does not yet protrude through the gums after placement in the jawbone but remains hidden under the gums during the healing phase.

After three to six months, this implant is located again in the jawbone, and an extension piece (abutment) is then placed on it, which protrudes through the gums. The choice between a one-stage or two-stage implant depends, among other things, on the quality of the jawbone.
